On the slopes of a Mount Joly in Haute-Savoie

Mont-Joly, a mountain which dominates the village Contamines-Montjoie.

When during your childhood a mountain is constantly under your eyes, abrupt and black facade of schists or dark green of forests, but with shoulders of green high mountain pastures all in curvature, it comes one moment when you want to celebrate it !

Taking advantage of a short recent stay having allowed me to complete some views those whom I already possessed, here is a page to speak about this Mount that I often traveled in my youth.

Towards in the bottom(stocking) of slopes, in the bed of one of the torrents, opens an excavation that my brothers had explored. The legend, they told me wanted that this underground passage crosses the mountain and results in the sides of Megève, iin the parallel valley in Contamines. I have never known if this story had a beginning of the truth, but actually Mont-Joly separates these two villages, them while connecting, from part and from others, by its slopes skiers marked out by chairlifts and others go back ski tows.

A former scholar who has long lived in the Contamines, Father Henri Lacombe, thought that the name "Joly" was a distortion of Jupiter, and that this mountain was devoted to Roman times to the king of the gods ... Once up there with a large panorama of the Mont-Blanc chain and the Aravis and other summits of the Massif Beaufortain, we understand that the elders were able to devote this summit to Jupiter.
