The All Saints' Day, on November 1st - Day at the same time intimate for all those who want to remember themselves of their dead close relation, and also in the daytime of official demonstration for the deaths ' for the Homeland '.
I add this engraving, frontispiece of the work ' Of the devotion of the Christians to the deaths ' published in 1683,
ALL SAINTS' DAYS. We report the institution of this party(holiday), to pope Boniface IV who was raised(brought up) on the Holy See the year 607 of the time of emperor Phocas. This pope, instead of destroying the Pantheon, that is, the temple of all the gods, that Marc Agrippa, favorite of Auguste, had made build in honour of Jupiter the Avenger, because of the battle of Actium, that this emperor had won against Marc-Antoine and Cléopâtre, cleansed it, and dedicated it to God, under the name of saint Vierge and of all the martyrs. At the same time he ordered that every year, in the day of this dedication, which was May 13th, we made in Rome a big solemnity. This Pantheon was maybe the only illustrious monument which was left by the idolization. The famous temples of Jupiter Capitolin in Rome, of Jupiter Céleste in Carthage, of Apollo to Delphes, Diane in Ephesus, from Serapis to Alexandria had been destroyed; and there was even an edict of Theodose, which ordered to bring down all these places of abomination, and to plant crosses on their ruins. This conduct was necessary in first time of the church, to give more horror of the superstitions of the Paganism; and saint Grégoire le Grand, a few years before Boniface IV had also acted there towards the temples of England, at the beginning of the conversion of the English people; but since then, considering that the idolization was not to be any more afraid, we preferred to cleanse these temples, that to ruin them to build it of new. It was in this sight that Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon, that we called saint Marie to the Martyrs, then Notre-Dame of the Rotunda, because of the face of the building which is in circle. This party of all the Martyrs gave rise to that of all the Saints, which was established the year 835 by pope Grégoire IV being in France, with the consent of Louis le Débonnaire, a king of France and an emperor, who, having communicated it with the prelates of his(her, its) kingdom, made it a prescription, and assigned it in the daytime to the first one of November, ordering that it is celebrated with the same solemnity as the biggest parties of the year. This edict could not have of strength that in the area of his states; but since then, by conformity, the party spread by all the West; and pope Sixte IV the year 1480 added it an octave.
The Greeks and the Oriental began to celebrate much more late this party, and make it at the moment on Sundays of the octave of the Pentecost which is the Trinity Sunday to Latin.
